Bio Molecular Systems

Japan – Eukaryotic Microorganism Genetics

Professor Kamakura Takashi | The Tokyo University of Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Applied Biological Science | 2018

“Eukaryotic microorganisms such as fungi (mold fungi) have smaller chromosomes compared to complex multicellular organisms; therefore, it is a research material that has essentially full functionalities of eukaryotes while its molecular biological analysis is simpler. Using this material, our laboratory aims to elucidate basic biological phenomena that have not been revealed yet. We used to go to the research core facility to run real-time PCR that is a little away from our laboratory because we did not have the equipment in our lab. Although the sharing equipment is convenient, we have to wait in line in case the schedule overlaps with other labs. In addition, we felt inconvenience such as having to carry the samples to the research core facility. Under such circumstances, we had the opportunity to know the Mic real time PCR introduced by Scrum Inc. The low cost and the size of the equipment were intriguing to us initially. We also highly appreciated that no dedicated PC is necessary and our own personal PCs can operate it through a wireless connection. We decided to buy the Mic real time PCR since we had enough budget at the end of the fiscal year. It has been half a year since we purchased it. Students now got used to the operation of Mic, and we use it very frequently. We are highly satisfied with the reproducibility of the Mic, which I was not expecting much initially”. – Professor Karakura Takashi, 2018
